Background problem: Racism in the use of genomics
Case in Point:
Dr James Watson of Watson and Crick Model fame, a Nobel laureate if you please. Also, the founding director of the ever-famous public Human Genome Project
What Happened:
Talking about the “prospects of Africa,” he made the following remarks to the interviewers in 2007:
“All our (American) social policies are based on the fact that their (African Blacks’) intelligence is the same as ours-whereas testing says not really. “
His evidence being “people who have to deal with black employees find this is not true.” (in other words: Black Americans do not have the same level of intelligence as the Whites).
He also prophesied in this Times of London interview that the ‘proof’ of his claims would surface in 10 or 15 years.
The Grey Irony:
When Dr Watson published his own genome, it was found out (by scientists at deCode Genetics) that he had 16 times more genes of black origin than the average white European (6 percent compared to the expected 1 percent.”
Roughly this amounts to him having a great-grandparent of African origin.
